At an event in London Tina Turner announced who would be playing her in the musical of her life
Legendary pop star Tina Turner has announced who will play her in the musical about her life.
Tina the Musical, with a book by Katori Hall and songs from Turner, is to open at the Aldwych next year, directed by Mamma Mia director Phyllida Lloyd. Adrienne Warren will play Tina, making her West End debut in the show.
Warren's previous credits include Shuffle Along at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway, for which she received a Tony nomination. Her other US theatre credits include Bring it On the Musical at St James Theatre, Dreamgirls at the Apollo Theatre, which was followed by a National Tour, and The Wiz at Encores City Centre.
Tina the Musical will chart the singer's life from humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee to a global icon.
Turner said: "It has been my joy to introduce Adrienne today. From the moment I met her at our last workshop I saw her exceptional talent. Playing this role will require immense physical and emotional commitment, and bravery too. We are thrilled to have found Adrienne, and I very much look forward to spending more time together and developing a special friendship."
The show will have choreography from Anthony van Laast, set and costume designs by Mark Thompson, musical supervision by Nicholas Skilbeck, lighting by Bruno Poet, sound by Nevin Steinberg, casting from Pippa Ailion and orchestrations by Ethan Popp.
Tina the Musical runs at the Aldwych Theatre from 17 April until 16 June, with previews from 21 March.
