Adam Penford appointed artistic director of Nottingham Playhouse

Adam Penford has been named the new artistic director of Nottingham Playhouse, and will take over the venue's artistic programme in 2018. He will replace Giles Croft who announced earlier this year he was stepping down after 18 years in the role, saying it was time to "hand over to a new generation".

Penford, whose recent directing credits include The Boys in the Band at Park Theatre and Unfaithful at Found 111, said today: "I am so thrilled to have been asked by the board at Nottingham Playhouse to become its next artistic director.

"I was born and raised in Nottingham and had my first theatrical experiences as a child at the Playhouse. I look forward to collaborating with Stephanie [Sirr, chief executive of Nottingham Playhouse] and the whole team as the company begins a new chapter in its illustrious history."

His other work includes A Small Family Business at the National Theatre and revival director of One Man Two Guvnors. He was also the associate director on the National Theatre’s 50 Years on Stage event, and will direct Platinum at Hampstead Theatre later this year.

Caroline Shutter, chair of trustees at Nottingham Playhouse said: "This is an exciting time for the Playhouse with the appointment of Adam who impressed the Board with his combined passion for Nottingham and his artistic vision.

"I have no doubt he will be creating and delivering a range of exciting work on and beyond the theatre’s stage that will attract new audiences."
