Twickenham Theatre closes less than a month after opening

The 100-seat venue opened last month with a production of ”Sweeney Todd”

London's newest fringe theatre is closing less than a month after it opened with an acclaimed revival of Sweeney Todd.

The Twickenham Theatre has been forced to vacate its premises in just two days after its pub home was sold by the proprietor.

Executive director Tony Green described the news as a "total bombshell".

"I have been advised that the pub has been sold and that the new landlords 'do not figure theatre as part of their plans'," he added. "To make matters worse, the new landlords, along with the brewery and the superior landlords of the site are not going to honour the three months' notice period I had in place."

Sweeney Todd starred Olivier Award winner David Bedella in the title role opposite Sarah Ingram as his pie-making partner in crime, Mrs Lovett (both pictured). After winning positive reviews it was extended until 12 October.

According to Green, the hunt for new premises has started.
