Netflix has announced a new drama based on Peter Morgan's The Audience, titled The Crown, which will be the company's first UK-based series.

The first season, which has a budget of $100million, will feature ten episodes and premiere in 2016.

Peter Morgan's WhatsOnStage Award-winning play explores a series of pivotal meetings between the Queen and her Prime Ministers, and starred Helen Mirren in the original production last year.

Morgan, who also wrote the film The Queen, will write the screenplay for the series, which will see each season looking at a decade of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. The play's director Stephen Daldry will direct.

Claire Foy is rumoured to be playing the Queen in her early years, and it is unclear at this stage as to whether or not Mirren will reprise her role.

The Audience starring Helen Mirren is transferring to Broadway next year, with a simultaneous production starring Kristin Scott Thomas being staged at the Apollo Theatre.
