My Top 5 Showtunes: Hayden Tee

The actor tells us the musical numbers he couldn’t live without

New Zealand actor Hayden Tee's credits include South Pacific, Little Women, Titanic and Cats. He was one of twelve finalists in the international BBC Voice of Musical Theatre competition after which he took the role of Marius in Les Miserables in London.

He is currently playing Javert in Les Miserables, a role which he has also played in Dubai.

We caught up with Hayden and asked him: "If you were stranded on a desert island which five showtunes could you not live without?"

1. "Ring of Keys" – from Fun Home

It's innocence and wonder at the discovery of love and attraction is universal and something
everyone can relate to.

2. "Meadowlark" from The Baker's Wife

"Meadowlark" is my favourite musical theatre song of all time. It is such an amazing complete and
complex story song that is beautiful in it's original context in The Baker's Wife or as a stand-alone
song.

3. "Waving Through a Window" from Dear Evan Hansen

Because Dear Evan Hansen is my current obsession. Listen to it! That is all!!

4. "Smell of Rebellion" from Matilda

I love this song because it has so many tempo, style and feel changes which are all dramatically
justified. It also has the one brief moment that Trunchbull gets to be vulnerable and the audience
gets a glimpse at why she is the way she is.

5. "Playbill"

This John Bucchino song isn't really a show tune but it's by a musical theatre composer. It is a
stunning story song that really captures the energy, nerves and the subtle dance of picking someone
up or courting a potential lover.
