Antony Sher and Tamzin Outhwaite feature in Hampstead autumn season

Antony Sher will return to Hampstead Theatre later this year to play Sigmund Freud in Terry Johnson’s own revival of his 1993 farce Hysteria.

The autumn season also features the world premiere of Raving by Simon Paisley Day, starring Tamzin Outwaite in the lead.

Johnson’s play is set in Swiss Cottage in 1938, where Sigmund Freud fled to escape Nazi-occupied Austria. At 82, he aims to spend his final days in peace. Then Salvador Dali turns up and discovers a less than fully dressed woman in the closet, and peace becomes somewhat elusive.

The production, which runs from 12 September to 12 October 2013 (previews from 5 September), is a remounting of the Theatre Royal Bath production of last year, which also starred Sher alongside Will Keen as Dali.

Hampstead artistic director Edward Hall said: “We are delighted to welcome Terry Johnson back to Hampstead this autumn. His longstanding relationship with Hampstead has continued over the last twelve months with his productions of Old Money and Race, and now he will direct his brilliant Hysteria.”

It’s followed, from 24 October to 23 November (previews from 17 October), by the premiere of actor Simon Paisley Day’s debut play Raving.

Directed by Hall, it centres on a couple whose attempt to have a quiet, child-free weekend in Wales soon descends into total chaos.

Tamzin Outhwaite returns to Hampstead following Di and Viv and Rose in the spring. Her other theatre credits include Sweet Charity and Boeing Boeing (both West End).

Edward Hall said: “With new plays at the heart of our programme, we continue our mission to seek out the newest talent and are really excited about Simon Paisley Day’s debut play, Raving. This intelligent comedy sees the return of Tamzin Outhwaite to our stage and I am very much looking forward to directing it.”

Paisley Day is best known as a comic actor, with recent credits including Twelfth Night at the National, and Private Lives and The 39 Steps in the West End.
