To mark its 25th anniversary, Louis de Bernières's novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin will come to the stage in its first major adaptation next spring.

Penned for the stage by Rona Munro (My Name is Lucy Barton), the piece is set on a Greek island and follows the life of Dr Iannis and his daughter Pelagia during the Italian and German occupation of World War II. In 2001 the novel was adapted into a film starring Nicolas Cage, Penélope Cruz and Christian Bale.

The production will be directed by Olivier and Tony Award-nominee Melly Still (The Lovely Bones), with set and costume designs by Mayou Trikerioti, lighting design by Malcolm Rippeth, sound design by Jon Nicholls, projection design by Dom Baker for OD Vision and music composed by Harry Blake.

Casting for the tour is to be announced.

The tour, co-produced by Rose Theatre Kingston, Neil Laidlaw Productions and Birmingham Repertory Theatre, will open at Curve Leicester on 13 April before running at Rose Theatre Kingston (23 April to 12 May), Theatre Royal Bath (14 to 18 May), Birmingham Rep (29 May to 15 June), King's Theatre Edinburgh (18 to 22 June) and Glasgow Theatre Royal (25 to 29 June).
