The festival kicked off on Sunday with a dazzling light and projection show at Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh International Festival got underway over the weekend, kicking off with an impressive light display at Edinburgh Castle on Sunday.

A crowd of 27,000 attended Deep Time, which charted 350 million years of history in 18 minutes with dazzling lights and projections.

The piece is based on the deep time theory, which explains the Earth’s age in terms of billions of years rather than thousands as previously thought, and was pioneered by Edinburgh resident James Hutton.

The final scenes of the production featured the faces of Edinburgh residents past and present projected onto the 7,000m² canvas on the western façade of Edinburgh Castle and Castle Rock.
