Key North-East Openings this August

August is a typically quiet month for new shows as theatre audiences go on holiday and chase the last of the summer sun. However, the Hull Truck Theatre is keeping active and briefly offers the following shows for limited runs.

OPENING  2nd August 2011,  The Lion in Winter written by James Goldman.

It is Christmas 1183, a time of peace and goodwill to all men. Unless you’re King Henry II of England and France, a man facing a not very festive holiday trapped in a castle with three sons determined to hang him rather than the decorations. There’s big, bad Prince Richard, obsessed with grabbing the throne; devious, calculating Prince Geoffrey, with more plots than an allotment, and smelly, grubby Prince John, whose main passion is avoiding as many hot baths as he can. Add to the mix a mistress and a vindictive wife determined to get one over on a husband who has her locked up in the tower for 360 days a year, and you’ve got a hilarious night packed full of wit, plot twists and brilliant dialogue from the writer of Robin and Marian. Get your tickets now. There might not be much comfort and joy for Henry but you’ll have a ball!

Presented by Chameleon Players.

The limited season continues until 6th August 2011

OPENING 24th August 2011, Quadrophenia by Pete Townshend.

The Who‘s classic album comes to the stage at Hull Truck this summer! Set at the height of the Mod era and told through the eyes of Jimmy, a hedonistic, style-conscious teenager, who is looking to find himself – and a girl!

Misunderstood by his parents and stuck in a dead-end job, he sets off on a trip to Brighton that will change his life forever. This compelling coming-of-age story is brought to life in Daniel Buckroyd’s original stage adaptation of the legendary album.

Pete Townshend‘s stunning score pulsates with life and brilliantly captures the excitement of a nation on the brink of change. An exhilarating theatrical experience for rebels and adolescents of all ages! Performed by a 25- strong cast drawn from Hull Truck’s Youth Theatre, aged 16-25.

Directed by Mark Rees.

The limited season continues until 27th August 2011.

OPENING 27th August 2011, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.

This summer Hull Truck Youth Theatre performs an unforgettable open air production of Lewis Carroll‘s classic Alice in Wonderland.

It is a long, warm summer’s day and Alice is bored. She doesn’t want to read or do any of her sister’s sensible suggestions. Then she sees a rabbit. A white one. With a pocket watch. And that’s when things start to take a rather curious turn…

Join Alice as she follows the white rabbit down the rabbit hole and delves into the world of wonderland. Have tea at the Mad Hatters, play croquet with flamingos and avoid upsetting the Queen of Hearts in a place where sense becomes nonsensical.

Set against the beautiful backdrop of Hymer’s College and performed by younger members of our Youth Theatre with live musicians, Alice in Wonderland is sure to be the exciting theatre event of the summer holidays. The adventure starts here…

Family audiences welcome. Bring some rugs, a picnic basket and join Alice in Wonderland.

This performance will take place at Hymers College.

Directed by Madeleine O’Reilly

This limited season continues until 29th August 2011.
