Juliet Stevenson Returns to Court as Heretic
Juliet Stevenson is set to return to the Royal Court in Richard Bean‘s new black comedy The Heretic. She was last seen on stage at the Sloan Square venue in the title role in Tom Murphy‘s The Alice Trilogy in 2005.
Olivier Award-winning actress Juliet Stevenson plays Dr Diane Cassell, a leading academic vilified for being at odds with the fervent believers that climate change is man-made. Her previous appearances at the Royal Court include The Country, Other Worlds and Death and the Maiden for which she won the 1992 Olivier Award. Amongst extensive theatre credits are Duet for One at the Almeida, The Seagull at the National Theatre and Burn This at the Hampstead Theatre and in the West End.
She is joined in the cast by James Fleet whose theatre credits include The Observer at the National Theatre, Twelfth Night at the RSC and Cloud Nine at the Almeida as Professor Kevin Maloney; Johnny Flynn who has been seen on film in Lotus Eaters and Crusade in Jeans as well as touring with Propellor playing Ben Shotter; Adrian Hood who appeared in Bean’s 2005 production of Harvest as well as The Rise and Fall of Little Voice at the National Theatre and in the West End who plays Geoff Tordoff; Leah Whitaker who also appeared in Harvest and Richard Bean’s Ignition 2 at the Royal Court as Catherine Tickell; and Lydia Wilson who was recently seen in the Lyric Hammersmith’s production of Blasted, who plays Phoebe.
As well as Harvest in 2005, the Royal Court have produced Richard Bean‘s Toast, Honeymoon Suite and Under the Whaleback. His play The Big Fellah for Out of Joint was recently seen at the Lyric Hammersmith and his play England People Very Nice was produced at the National Theatre.
The production is directed by the Royal Court’s deputy artistic director Jeremy Herrin who is currently directing EV Crowe’s Kin. His previous productions include the critically-acclaimed production of Anya Reiss’s Spur of the Moment. He was formerly an Associate Director at Live Theatre Newcastle, where he specialised in directing new writing.
The Heretic is designed by Peter McKintosh, with lighting by Paul Pyant and sound by Emma Laxton.
