What Were Your Theatre Highlights of the Decade???

As we reach the end of another year (and decade), newspapers have become increasingly taken up by retrospectives. Or, as Whatsonstage.com’s Michael Coveney put it in his blog, “round-up mania gathers apace and top ten lists proliferate like young girls claiming they’ve slept with Tiger Woods”.

According to the Sunday Times, which recently published a ‘Best of the Decade’ feature listing the top events across the cultural disciplines, the ultimate theatre productions of the noughties have come predominantly from the last three years (War Horse, Jerusalem and The Norman Conquests were the top three).

In the Guardian, Michael Billington listed the Royal Shakespeare Company’s eight-play Shakespeare History Cycle as the best production, and at the other end of the spectrum, A Right Royal Farce, Too Close to the Sun and Pet Shop Boys musical Closer to Heaven as the worst.

Meanwhile, in his review of the year on Whatsonstage.com, Michael Coveney names the Young Vic as his theatre of the year and Matthew Kelly as a rival to Mark Rylance for the crown of actor of the year.
