Photos: America Ferrera Fulfils Dream as West End Roxie

Ugly Betty star America Ferrera makes her British stage debut as Roxie Hart in Chicago on on 7 November 2011 when Kander and Ebb’s 1975 musical reopens at the West End’s Garrick Theatre.

The Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award-winner stars alongside Darius Campbell (formally Danesh) who rejoins the show playing lawyer Billy Flynn – he previously starred in the show back in 2006. The show’s new West End company also includes Amra-Faye Wright as Velma Kelly, James Doherty as Amos Hart, Jasna Ivir as Mama Morton and R Whitehead as Mary Sunshine.

Chicago, which played 603 performances from April 1979 at the Cambridge Theatre, was revived at the Adelphi Theatre on 18 November 1997 moving to the Cambridge on 28 April 2006 where it ran for over five years, closing on 27 August 2011 to make way for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s transfer of Roald Dahl page-to-stage musical Matilda.

Chicago won the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production as well as the 1998 Critics’ Circle Award for Best
Musical.

Speaking at a launch event held today at St Martin’s Lane Hotel in London’s West End, Ferrera said that joining the cast of a Chicago was a “dream come true”. Ferrera went on to say that performing in the West End had always been an ambition and that she looked forwards to following in the footsteps of the stars who have previously tackled the role. She also hinted that there may be plans for a Broadway project after her sint in the West End.
