Joely Richardson Stars in Ibsen’s Lady at Kingston Rose

Joely Richardson will star as Ellida in Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea at the Rose Theatre, Kingston next spring for a limited run.

Richardson follows in the footsteps of her mother Vanessa Redgrave and late sister Natasha who both achieved acclaim in the role – at the Royal Exchange and Almeida respectively.

Golden Globe winner Joely Richardson has starred in seven series of Nip/Tuck in the US and, more recently, The Tudors. Her recent stage appearances include Side Effects in New York. On film, she will soon be seen alongside her mother in Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous, and David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with Daniel Craig.

The Lady from the Sea, which runs from 23 February to 17 March 2012, will be directed by Rose artistic diretor Stephen Unwin who has directed five Ibsen productions, including an award-winning Hedda Gabler at the Donmar Warehouse.

Unwin said: “It gives me huge pleasure to stage Ibsen’s elusive masterpiece at the Rose, and I’m doubly delighted that Joely Richardson has decided to mark her return to the British stage with this collaboration.

“This will be my sixth production of Ibsen, but the first that I have staged at the Rose.

Ibsen is the great dramatist of the modern world and, in my opinion, second only to Shakespeare.“
