Opening: Kurt, Noble, Mysteries, Courage, Othello

Amongst the major London openings – in the West End and further afield – this week are:

OPENING TONIGHT, Monday 14 September 2009 (previews from 9 September), Danny Dyer and Shaun Evans play Sid Vicious and Kurt Cobain in Kurt and Sid, Roy Smiles’ new play about the two rock suicides, in Trafalgar Studios 2. Until 3 October (See News, 13 Jul 2009).

ALSO TONIGHT, surrealist Geordie comedian Ross Noble’s stand-up show Things transfers to the Apollo Theatre, continuing until 24 October (See News, 19 May 2009).

ALSO TONIGHT (previews from 8 September), Jack Thorne‘s new play 2nd May 1997, following the stories of three lives affected by the landslide Labour election victory, opens at the Bush Theatre, continuing to 10 October prior to a regional tour.

ALSO TONIGHT, John Barrowman pulls on dress and heels as he begins his stint as Albin/Zaza in La Cage aux Folles at the Playhouse Theatre (See Photos, 13 Jul 2009). Barrowman is the fourth actor to play the role in the Menier Chocolate Factory production, following Olivier winner Douglas Hodge, Graham Norton and recent incumbent Roger Allam.


OPENING TUESDAY, 15 September 2009 (previews from 11 September), The Mysteries – Yiimimangaliso, in which the biblical Mystery Plays are brought to life via South African dance and music, returns to the capital for a 25-night run at the Garrick Theatre (See News, 12 Jun 2009).


OPENING WEDNESDAY, 16 September 2009 (previews from Deborah Warner directs Fiona Shaw in Tony Kushner’s translation of Brecht’s 1939 polemic Mother Courage and Her Children at the NT Olivier, where it continues in rep to 8 December (See News, 18 Aug 2009).


OPENING FRIDAY, 18 September 2009 (previews from 11 September), comedian Lenny Henry’s acclaimed Othello, in which he made his Shakespearean debut earlier this year in Leeds (See News, 24 Apr 2009), transfers to Trafalgar Studios 1, continuing to 12 December.

ALSO FRIDAY, Michael Feast (Plague Over England) stars in Sylvia Reed’s award-winning play The Ones that Flutter, the story of a remarkable friendship between a warden and a prisoner serving his last few hours on earth, at Battersea’s Theatre503. Until 10 October.
