Opening: Fisher Song, Timon, Love & Swell Party

Amongst the major openings in London this week are:

OPENING MONDAY, 4 August 2008 (previews from 25 July), Connie
Fisher
and Alistair McGowan star in the Menier Chocolate Factory revival of
the musical They’re Playing Our Song, with book by
Neil Simon and music and lyrics by Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager
(See News, 23 Jun 2008).

The semi-autobiographical story is based on the often turbulent relationship
between composer Hamlisch and lyricist Bayer Sager, and the score includes
“Workin’ It Out”, “If He Really Knew Me”, “Just for Tonight”, “I Still Believe in
Love” and the title song. It runs at the Menier until 28 September 2008.

OPENING TUESDAY, 5 August 2008, Kwame Kwei-Armagh’s {Let
There Be Love::L0263205667}
returns to the Tricycle Theatre with the
original world premiere cast of Joseph Marcell, Sharon Duncan-Brewster and
Lydia Leonard. It runs for a limited season until 20 August 2008 (See
News, 19 May 2008).


OPENING WEDNESDAY, 6 August 2008 (previews from 26 July),
Lucy Bailey directs Timon of Athens at
Shakespeare’s Globe, starring Simon Paisley Day in the title role (See
News, 13 Jun 2008). The production is designed by
William Dudley, with choreography by Punchdrunk’s Maxine Doyle and music
by Django Bates, and runs until 3 October 2008 as part of the Globe’s Totus
Mundus repertory season.

ALSO ON WEDNESDAY, A Swell Party, a
concert celebration of the life and work of Cole Porter starring Maria
Friedman
and Daniel Evans, opens for a strictly limited run at London’s
Cadogan Hall (See News, 1 Jul 2008). Written by John
Kane and first staged at West End’s Vaudeville Theatre in 1991, the show
recreates the spirit of the legendary US songwriter through words and music
and includes classic songs like “I Get A Kick Out of You”, “I’ve Got You Under
My Skin” and “Night and Day”. It runs for four nights only until 9 August.

OPENING THURSDAY, 7 August 2008 (previews from 5 August),
Greenwich Playhouse presents {Anything You Can
Do::L0705970362}
, a revue featuring the music of Stephen Sondheim,
Jason Robert Brown and Irving Berlin, running until 24 August 2008.
