Photos: Spacey Is Richard III in Final Bridge Show

The final season of the three-year transatlantic Bridge Project opens tonight (29 June 2011) with Kevin Spacey in the title role of Sam MendesRichard III.

Unlike the first two Bridge Project seasons, which launched two productions in rep from partner theatre, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Richard III opens at the Old Vic (where Spacey took over as artistic director in 2003) before touring internationally. The show plays New York from 10 January 2012.

Appearing alongside Spacey are Annabel Scholey, Gemma Jones, Haydn Gwynne and Chuk Iwuji as well as Broadway’s Maureen Anderman and Chandler Williams. The Anglo-American company includes Jack Ellis, Katherine Manners, Simon Lee Phillips, Gary Powell, Michael Rudko, Hannah Stokely and Americans Stephen Lee Anderson, Jeremy Bobb, Nathan Darrow, Isaiah Johnson, Andrew Long and Howard Overshown.

Previous Bridge Project productions have included The Winter’s Tale and Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, followed by You Like It and The Tempest last year. Company members have included Simon Russell Beale, Sinead Cusack, Rebecca Hall, Stephen Dillane, Juliet Rylance, Ron Cephas Jones, Christian Camargo and Hollywood’s Ethan Hawke.

Richard III reunites Kevin Spacey and Sam Mendes as actor and director for the first time since Mendes famously directed Spacey in 1999 film American Beauty, for which they both won Oscars.
