Photos: Audiences Lulled to Sleep at Barbican

Independent arts outfit Duckie premiered Lullaby – billed as London’s first sleep-over performance – at the Barbican’s Pit this week (previews from 24 June 2011, staggered press nights to 29 June) with creators and performers H Plewis, Harriet Plewis, Matthew Robins and Tim Spooner, director Mark Whitelaw and designer Laura Hopkins creating a unique sleep-inducing performance experience.

Aiming to send theatregoers to sleep in unison, ideally for a blissful seven hours, the piece includes gentle songs performed by Harriet Plewis and soothing narrative.

Comfortable and beautifully dressed beds, copious amounts of hot chocolate and even breakfast in the morning are designed to enhance the feeling of complete relaxation for audience members.

The show’s producer Simon Casson even stated the sole purpose of the immersive experience is to “not to engage or excite, but just make people nod off”. Duckie’s unique bed-time experience remains at the Barbican until 24 July 2011 – just remember to bring your pyjamas.
