1st Night Photos: Starry Opening for Delicate Albee

Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance, directed by James Macdonald, opened last night (12 May, previews from 5 May) at the Almeida Theatre.

Featuring a star-studded cast which includes Imelda Staunton, Penelope Wilton, Tim Pigott-Smith, Ian McElhinney, Diana Hardcastle and Lucy Cohu, the production runs until 2 July 2011.

Winning Albee his first Pulitzer Prize, A Delicate Balance centres around Agnes and Tobias, wealthy and glamorous urban socialites whose lives are thrown off kilter thanks to the return of their newly divorced daughter and the constant presence of Agnes’ alcoholic sister. Through Albee’s signature wit, the character’s battle with their fear of reality, preferring their familiar world of drinking parties, social clubs, and the comfort of their drawing room.
