McCartney Raises His Voice for Roof of Old Vic

The Old Vic will celebrate its 192nd birthday on 1 July 2010 with an inaugural fundraiser to fix the crumbling roof of the theatre – led by music legend Sir Paul McCartney.

The venue thus far has never found the funds to fix the damage from WWII air raids and the problem has recently started to deteriorate. But with a little help from his friend, the former Beatle, it seems artistic director Kevin Spacey has found a way to make sure the theatre reaches its bicentenary.

McCartney has agreed to an exclusive performance to help raise some of the money needed for the repairs to the theatre. He also intends to give some of the proceeds to his own campaign, ‘Meat Free Monday’ which seeks to raise awareness of the impact meat production and consumption on the environment.  The performance is to be accompanied by an art auction and will take place at the Boiler House in Battersea Power Station.  

The evening will be hosted by Kevin Spacey himself, who told the Evening Standard: “We are thrilled Paul McCartney will lend his extraordinary talents to the evening alongside brilliant artists who’ve generously donated their artworks for auction. It’s set to be quite a night!” It marks the first of a new series of annual fundraisers for the Old Vic to ensure it meets its target.

Tickets to the event range from £500 for the champagne reception, dinner and art auction to £10,000 for a premium table of ten which offers a VIP reception with Spacey and star guests.
