Casting announced for Sheffield Show Boat

Daniel Evans’s production of the Broadway classic opens in December

Casting has been announced for the upcoming Sheffield Theatres revival of classic musical Show Boat.

Artistic director Daniel Evans will direct Michael Xavier as Gaylord Ravenal, Gina Beck as Magnolia Hawks, Lucy Briers as Parthenia Hawks, Sandra Marvin as Queenie, Emmanuel Kojo as Joe, Rebecca Trehearn as Julie La Verne and Allan Corduner as Captain Andy Hawks.

The epic musical, which features music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, follows the lives and loves of three generations aboard a show boat as it plies the Mississippi River.

The score features classics including "Make Believe", "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" and "Ol' Man River".

Michael Xavier's musical theatre credits include Assassins (Menier), The Pajama Game (Shaftesbury Theatre), The Sound of Music (Open Air Theatre), Love Story (Chichester and West End) and Hello, Dolly! (Leivester Curve'').

Gina Beck's theatre work includes Wicked (Apollo Victoria), The Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty's) and Les Miserables (Queen's).

Show Boat opens in the Crucible Theatre on 16 December (previews from 10 December), and runs until 16 January 2016.

The cast will be completed by: Ian Carlyle (Charlie), John Coates (Sherrif Ike Vallon), Danny Collins (Frank Schultz), Adam Dutton (Windy), Nolan Frederick (Jake), Bob Harms (Steve Baker), Kate Milner-Evans (Mrs O'Brien), Tosh Wanogho-Maud (Willy), Alex Young (Ellie May Chipley), Ryan Pidgen (Pete Gavin), Akintunde Esuruoso, Victoria Hinde, Cristina Hoey, Linda John-Pierre, Linford Johnson, Maria Omakinwa and Kenny Thompson.
