TV and stage star Alistair McGowan will lead the cast in the Watermill's new production of Dylan Thomas's comic play Under Milk Wood, which opens at the venue on 25 October.

Directed by Brendan O'Hea, McGowan will be the First Voice in a company including Steffan Cennydd, Ross Ford, Lynn Hunter, Charlotte O’Leary and Caroline Sheen.

Dylan Thomas's much-loved radio drama, first performed in 1954, is set in the quaint Welsh seaside village of Llareggub, featuring an assortment of characters who will, in the Watermill production, be played by the ensemble.

The show is significant for the venue – not only is it the penultimate show in the Watermill's 50th anniversary season, but it was also the first professional production performed there in 1967, in a cast featuring David Jason. The venue has recently transferred the The Wipers Times to the West End and its production of Crazy for You starring Tom Chambers is currentlyon a national tour.

The show, which features both visual and oral storytelling, will be designed Anna Kelsey with sound design from Gary Dixon.

Under Milk Wood runs at the Watermill Theatre from 25 October to 4 November.
