Penelope Wilton, Jonathan Slinger and Lolita Chakrabarti cast in Fanny & Alexander at the Old Vic

The adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s film opens in February next year

Casting for the Old Vic's production of Fanny & Alexander has been announced.

Penelope Wilton will play Mrs Helena Ekdahl, Michael Pennington plays Isak Jacobi/Death, Jonathan Slinger plays Gustav Adolf Ekdahl, Catherine Walker plays Emilie Ekdahl and Lolita Chakrabarti will play Alma Ekdahl/Helena Vergerus.

Thomas Arnold plays Carl Ekdahl/Mr Landhal, Kevin Doyle will play Bishop Edvard Vergerus, Karina Fernandez plays Lydia Ekdahl/Justina, Annie Firbank plays Vega/Blenda Vergerus, Matt Gavin plays Michael Bergman/Aron Retzinsky, Gloria Obianyo plays Petra Ekdahl/Pauline/Ismael Retzinsky, Vivian Oparah plays Maj, Sargon Yelda plays Oscar Ekdhl. Tim Lewis, Hannah James Scott and Gary Mackay make up the ensemble, while the role of Fanny will be alternated by Zaris Angel Hator, Amy Jayne Leigh, Molly Shenker and Katie Simons. The role of Alexander will be alternated by Guillermo Bedward, Kit Connor, Jack Falk and Misha Handley.

Stephen Beresford has adapted Ingmar Bergman's film for the stage, and Max Webster directs the production which will open in February next year.

Fanny & Alexander is set in the 1900s in Sweden, where siblings Fanny and Alexander's widowed mother remarries the local bishop. The original film was released in 1982.

Fanny & Alexander opens at the Old Vic on 1 March and runs until 14 April, with previews from 21 Febraury.
