Caryl Churchill's play Escaped Alone has won the award for Best Play at the Writers' Guild Awards.

The play will return this month to the Royal Court after it premiered there last year. It follows a group of older woman chatting about their lives in a post-apocalyptic. It stars Deborah Findlay, Linda Bassett, Kika Markham and June Watson.

The runners-up in the Best Play category were Cyrpus Avenue by David Ireland, and All The Little Lights by Jane Upton.

Tom Stoppard was also honoured at the awards, presented by actress Meera Syal, for his Outstanding Contribution to Writing. Stoppard is best known for penning plays such as Travesties (opening at the Apollo Theatre next month) and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, a new production of which will open at the Old Vic in March and star Daniel Radcliffe.

Elsewhere, the joint winners of Best Play for Young Audiences were Ed Harris for What The Thunder Said, and Lisa Evas for Rise Up. Joel Horwood was the runner up with This Changes Everything.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge won the award for Best TV Situation Comedy for the first episode of Fleabag, which started as a one woman show at the Soho Theatre.
