Features

A few of my favourite things: Dogfight's Jamie Muscato

The actor counts eating in the dark, ”1984” and Phillip Seymour Hoffman among his favourite things

Jamie Muscato was recently seen in the world première of The Light Princess at the National Theatre. He has also appeared in Les Miserables (both the feature film and on the international tour), Rock Of Ages, Love Story and Spring Awakening at Lyric Hammersmith.

From August 8, Jamie can be seen in Dogfight at the Southwark Playhouse.

So Jamie, what's your favourite…

Film

My favourite film is Into The Wild. I've seen it more times that I care to admit and it's always just as good each time! The cinematography is INCREDIBLE and Emile Hirsch absolutely smashes it out of the park in the acting department.

Place to hang out in London?

There's too many cool places in London to choose one favourite place to hang out. I'm actually writing this sitting in a sunny park in Borough. The Open Spaces Trust have put on a sort of mini-festival with live music and food and stuff. That's what's so good about London, if you walk around long enough you'll discover something cool and have a new favourite hangout spot for a few hours!

Restaurant? (What would you order?)

My fav restaurant at the moment is Dans Le Noir. I went there for my last birthday, it's a completely unique experience. You can choose from either the meat, veg, seafood or chef's special menu's but apart from that broad overview you've no idea what you're eating because the restaurant is utterly pitch black! You can't see your fork in front of your face. When you finish you get to see what you've eaten and it's usually not what you thought it was. I had Ostrich, Springbok and Crocodile but you could end up with anything from hamburgers to haggis!

Holiday Destination?

I'm not actually hugely well traveled, I've done a few places in Europe and America but I'd really love to take a year out at some point and really explore the world, maybe jump off a few waterfalls and look into a few volcanoes. Road trips across India and Africa are definitely on the bucket list!

Play/Musical that you have seen?

I couldn't possibly pick a favourite play, the quality of theatre in this city makes this kind of thing way too hard! But if I were to list a few things I've loved seeing recently 1984 would be high up, as would Mr Burns at the Almeida and Home and King Lear at the National.

Favourite musical's gotta be the one I'm working on at the moment, Dogfight. I hadn't heard anything about it before the auditions but the score is incredible and even though I've had my brain completely saturated with the songs for the last few weeks they're still so enjoyable to listen to/sing!

Theatre to visit?

My favourite theatre to visit has got to be the National. I like turning up and getting the cheap tickets with my equity card to whatever has a spare seat, haven't seen a thing there that's less than brilliant yet.

Theatre to perform in?

The Novello's my favourite theatre to work in, it was the first place I worked in the West End so it'll always be a special place for me, but I'll also pop in to the stage door of the Shaftesbury if ever I'm passing to say hello to Harry, the most awesome stage door keeper there is!

Actress/Actor?

My favourite actor is Phillip Seymour Hoffman, everything he ever did was sensational. I was gutted when he passed away, not only because he was way too young but also for the selfish reason that I won't get to enjoy seeing him in any of the future movies that he would have inevitably been amazing in.
