Taketh Me Away

The Attic theatre at Pleasance has oft been the birthplace of gems and this is no exception. When Helen, age 12, discovers Take That, she finds a companion, a confidant and a world in which to hide. Her obsession with Jason is evident throughout the design which features orange pictures, orange clothes and orange accessories. Three actors bring us Helen, her best friend Lynn, Helen’s mum and her new boyfriend Dave, plus new neighbour Sarah, who, importantly, is from Walthamstow.

Lynn and Helen compare and share their lives and those of their single mums in 1990s Manchester, paralleled with Helen’s rapidly growing obsession for the songs of her favourite band. The audience can hum along and cry along with this emotional story (especially if you actually remember Live n Kicking), then meet 2011-Helen along the way and see how it all ends up.
