Andrea’s Got Two Boyfriends

David Willinger’s Andrea’s Got Two Boyfriends employs a quasi-documentary style narrated by Mike, a counsellor working with three developmentally challenged adults at Crystal Park, a care facility in New York.

The subjects of this documentary are Andrea and her two boyfriends, Freddie and Richard, all of whom are “exiles from their own homes”, according to Mike. Mike guides the audience through daily life at Crystal Park by explaining how the residents cope with simple tasks, such as getting dressed and making peanut butter sandwiches, in addition to how his attitudes have changed since he started working there four years and ten months ago.

The script is funny in places – for instance, when Andrea drops her books and tells them off as though they are naughty children – but a lot is lost as the result of performing to such a tiny audience. On a day when more people attend, there will undoubtedly be more laughs.

The performances given by New Salisbury Players from the USA are competent, but the show felt rushed and was a little shy of its 45 minute running time. A stronger connection with the material is required in order for this play to truly shine.
