Nothing much wrong with the play, either, but Godber’s production doesn’t come across with the freshness and flair it once did, despite the new storm of logos on the rugby shirts, and a gratuitous new reference to The X-Factor.
There’s an over-familiar feel about the old has-been player knocking a crap pub side into shape in order to take on the best in the amateur league, and the on-field manoeuvres no longer seem hilarious or ingenious.
The cast is okay without being outstanding. It includes a fit-looking Robert Angell, best known as Hunter in Gladiators on television.
Abi gets them all going on the exercise bike after proving her stomach muscle in those killer sit-ups. She also handles Godber’s mock Shakespearean couplets as well as she does the balls on the pitch.
