Beyond the Fringe: Five Edinburgh hits you can now see in London
George Brant’s new play about a hot-rod F16 fighter pilot forced to take a desk job due to her pregnancy picked up a Fringe First and a raft of rave reviews. Helmed by the Gate’s artistic director Christopher Haydon it stars Lucy Ellinson (pictured), who was nominated for a Stage Award for her performance.
Gate Theatre, until 28 September
This acclaimed new one-woman show written and performed by rising star Phoebe Waller-Bridge won both a Fringe First and a Stage Award for Acting Excellence. At Edinburgh, WhatsOnStage’s chief critic Michael Coveney described it as a “sharp-edged gem of a solo show.”
Soho Theatre, 3-22 September
Tim Price‘s ‘play with songs’, satirising the Scottish independence debate centres on a band comprising an Englishman, a Northern Irishman, a Scotsman and a Welshman (no joke). It’s directed by Hamish Pirie, who also collaborated with Price on the Olivier-nominated play Salt, Root and Roe.
St James Theatre, until 7 September
David Greig‘s latest play, which scooped a Fringe First and Carol Tambor Award in Edinburgh, was partly inspired by the Anders Breivik massacre in Norway, and examines the effect of a similar atrocity on a small community choir. Hard-hitting, urgent drama.

Bridget Christie: A Bic for Her
See this year’s Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award winner with her show A Bic for Her which, among other things, asks why women need their own special pens, and who decided Thatcher and Beyonce were feminist icons. Brilliant stuff from a comedy superstar in the making.
