Major New Production to Tour This Autumn

A new play by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran – who created the television series Birds of a Feather, Love Hurts, Shine on Harvey Moon and Goodnight Sweetheart – receives its stage première on 9 September. Von Ribbentrop’s Watch is a joint production by the Watford Palace Theatre and the Oxford Playhouse and will be directed by Watford’s artistic director Brigid Larmour.

The plot concerns the inheritance of the title’s timepiece by one Gerald Roth. He’s a wine merchant whose business is not doing well, to put it bluntly, and his father’s legacy could make him some much-needed money. But there are problems associated with any such Nazi memorabilia, especially when the owner is Jewish – and they all spill out at his family’s Passover dinner.

A large cast includes Paul Brightwell, Jessica Dickens, Jack Ellis, Andrew Paul], Gwyneth Strong and Barbara Young. The designer is Emma Wee with lighting design by Charlie Lucas. Larmour’s most recent production was of Mrs Reynolds and the Ruffian in April this year; she also directed the well-received My Mother Said I Never Should last autumn.

The short tour of Von Ribbentrop’s Watch is in Oxford from 9 to 18 September, at the Watford Palace Theatre 21 to 25 September then at the Richmond Theatre from 5 to 9 October and finishes at the Salisbury Playhouse between 12 and 16 October. It is possible that other dates may be added later in the autumn.
