Disney On Ice – 100 Years of Disney Magic (Newcastle)

Gee whizz, how time flies. Just one little ole century ago, a young kid named Disney was drawing the mouse that would one day take over the world! Yes, it’s true, 100 years of Magic is a tenuous title – we are commemorating Walt being eight and a half, here, but remember, grown ups, leave your logic at the door and all will be well!

This is a kiddie beano of legendary proportions – and that’s just the bus ride in, as whatever Disney doll is the current fave. This show is as much for the boys as the girls this year, after some seriously soppy stuff aimed at would-be female royalty in the two previous shows.

The general theme seems to be ‘Films we need to make more money from’ so we have a slightly chaotic mishmash of characters including Lilo, Mulan, Pinocchio, Nemo and more. The skating wart-hog was a blast. Hardly anyone falls over, which I was secretly rather sorry for, being the villain that I am.

We’re a couple of set pieces short of a true spectacle, however and the jumbled approach lacks a coherent structure. But for all those wide-eyed mini Cinderellas and budding Buzz’s, it is still a wish come true.
