Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Tour – Sunderland)
When I first learned to sing it was because of a new musical especially written for children, some forty something years on, it is as fresh in my mind as those carefree days at Star of the Sea primary school. How fortunate that a love of theatre was begun then, and how it continues to inspire and enrich today. The children on stage are the highlight of the show, and they sing with clarity and beauty. Their stillness on stage is a testament to a great story told through song.
The cast is enthusiastic and play the many roles and ‘doubling up’ with faultless energy, there never seems to be a moment when they aren’t on stage in one guise or another.
Sets for this show are creative and in keeping with the title of the show, colourful; a special mention must be made to the sheep! I loved them, and they made me laugh, even while writing I have a wry smile.
Joseph in its tried and tested formula works well and delivers what it always was written to do. If you want sub plot and deep and meaningful lyrics then this show isn’t for you. If on the other hand, you want a really great feel good night at the theatre Joseph is your man. The show in its new guise is a vibrant and energetic production that had some members of the audience on their feet well before the ‘megamix’ finale.
