Roll up for Hull Truck’s first ever community play
Written by Morgan Sproxton, City of Light is a heart-warming love story set against the backdrop of Hull Fair. The love-struck couple, local-boy Bert and travelling entertainer Rose meet in 1935 pre-wartime Hull, and make a fateful promise to each other one evening on the carousel.
The cast – comprising of 50 local people – will be wearing over 150 costumes designed by Hull Truck Theatre’s Wardrobe Department and will be joined on stage by a 5 piece band performing original songs by Hull musician Bernie Laverick.
Not only will theatregoers be treated to the spectacle of the play itself; the Theatre foyer will be transformed into a fairground with displays and performances including stilt walkers, jugglers, a fortune teller and the challenge of beating Hull Fair’s resident boxer.
Director Morgan Sproxton states: “People in Hull grow up with the fair, everyone talks about it and the build-up is massive. Whether you have just heard about the fair, visited as a child or go religiously every year you know what it is all about. I’ve always wanted to write about it and to have it performed as a community play is really special for me – I’m a Hull girl so I’m a part of it all too. We’ve got some brilliant people involved and I hope it’s an experience they’ll remember forever.”
