Scaramouche Jones rides again

North East theatergoers can see a special preview performance (at a
specially reduced price) of Justin Butcher’s one-man play Scaramouche Jones at The People’s Theatre in Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne, on Thursday 27 August.

Newcastle based Theatre Company Esra Taf Theatre & JHRMusics are hitting the road this month, embarking on a “Highlands & Islands” Scottish tour, playing in specially selected theatres north of the border, including those on the Scottish Western Islands.

Thankful to the People’s for their support in offering replacement rehearsal space for their 2008 production, Esra Taf thought it would be the ideal place to warm up before setting off on their Hebridean adventure.

Originally developed as the first in-house presentation for Ouseburn’s Round Theatre, Esra Taf had to rapidly make other arrangements when the Round suddenly and unexpectedly closed.

Luckily Northern Stage stepped in and Scaramouche Jones was able to go ahead, to an overwhelmingly positive audience response.

In this powerful, affecting drama we are guided through the extraordinary adventures of Scaramouche Jones. Born a strangely pale-faced child at midnight on New Year’s Eve 1899, he was always destined to be a clown.

Now, as the champagne corks fly 100 years later on Millennium Eve, Scaramouche is about to give his last and most important performance. Stepping out of the circus ring he reveals the loves, brutalities and tragedies that made up the vivid odyssey of this life.

North East actor Gordon Russell returns as the eponymous clown, a role first notably played by Pete Postlethwaite.

Tickets for the preview performance at the People’s Theatre can be purchased from the box office on 0191 265 5020.
