Theatre Royal Staff Complete a ‘Hairy’ Marathon

On 23 May, nine staff members from York Theatre Royal braved the unseasonable heat to complete Edinburgh’s Marathon and Hairy Haggis Relay. Their efforts were in aid of the ‘Access for All Fund’, which was established to raise money for a wheelchair lift at the theatre’s new rehearsal rooms, workshop space and youth theatre venue.

Prior to the event, Rebecca Storey, press and media manager for York Theatre Royal commented on their commitment to “making theatre accessible for all”, adding: “By installing a wheel chair lift in the De Greys Rooms everyone will be able to take part in our workshops and classes.”

The Hairy Haggis Relay allows athletes of all abilities to take part in the Edinburgh Marathon by completing the 26.2-mile course as part of a four-person team. Artistic director, Damian Cruden ran the full distance, while eight other members of staff formed two teams that completed the relay.

To date, around £1,330 of the £10,000 target has been raised, and further events are planned throughout the year.
