Birmingham Repertory Theatre will stage the UK premiere of The Exorcist.

A new staging of the production will run from 21 October to 5 November this year. John Pielmeier's play is based on the original novel by William Peter Blatty which was made into an Oscar winning film in 1973.

The story follows the young Regan, who is possessed by the devil, and Father Damien who comes to save the girl's soul.

The film was directed by William Friedkin and became one of the highest grossing movies of all time. It was famous for a controversy surrounding the use of subliminal imagery and was criticised for using an R rating and not an X. Pielmeier's version ran in 2012 in Los Angeles and is receiving its UK premiere at Birmingham Rep in association with Bill Kenwright Ltd.

Creatives and casting will be announced in due course. The age recommendation is 18-plus.

Glen Neath and David Rosenberg will perform Seance alongside the play between 18 and 29 October. The 15 minute immersive Seance takes place in darkness in a shipping container outside the REP theatre.

Tickets for The Exorcist are on sale from today.

The Exorcist runs at Birmingham Repertory Theatre from 21 October to 5 November.
