Kate Winslet eyes stage debut through Hare’s Skylight?

Kate Winslet is gearing up to make her long-awaited West End stage debut, ten years after the Oscar-winning actress came top of a Whatsonstage.com poll asking which screen stars readers would most like to see on stage (full results below).

According to the Daily Mail, Winslet is considering starring as Kyra in a revival of David Hare’s play Skylight, and could be playing opposite fellow Hollywood big-hitter Bill Nighy as her wealthy former lover.

The Mail’s Baz Bamigboye reports that Winslet “has been contemplating doing the play for the past three or four months and has been attempting to clear her schedule at the end of this year and into next, in order to do it”.

It’s yet to be confirmed whether it will be the West End or Broadway that will witness Winslet, star of films including Titanic, The Reader and Revolutionary Road, make her first stage appearance.

Skylight follows Kyra, a young teacher working in London, and Tom, a wealthy entrepreneur and Kyra’s former lover. Tom’s wife has recently died, and one cold winter night his teenage son calls Kyra, begging her to be reconciled with his father. The pair try to get along but old habits soon return, and they quickly return to brutal debate and insults.

In June 2002 Whatsonstage.com ran a ‘Big Debate’ poll asking readers which film stars they’d most list to see on stage. These were the results:

1. Kate Winslet (11%)
2. Tom Hanks (9%)
3. Al Pacino / Meryl Streep / Robert DeNiro(8%)
4. George Clooney (7%)
5. Johnny Depp (6%)
6. Julia Roberts (5%)
