Danny Boyle & Max Stafford-Clark honoured as part of Critics’ Circle centenary

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the Critics’ Circle is honouring five leading figures for services to the arts, including directors Max Stafford-Clark and Danny Boyle.

It marks the first time the Critics’ Circle, which is the UK’s only professional association of drama, music, film and art critics, has awarded five such honours at one time.

The other recipients are the late conductor Sir Colin Davis, Tate director Sir Nicholas Serota and ballet choreographer Sir Peter Wright.

Traditionally, the Critics’ Circle has made a single award annually
since 1988, with theatre director Sir Peter Hall being the first
recipient. Last year composer Stephen Sondheim became the first American to receive the honour.

Critics’ Circle president Simon Tait said: “As 2013 is a
momentous milestone in the history of the Critics’ Circle, it is only
fitting that we should honour five leading figures from drama, music,
film, dance and visual arts with acknowledging their Services to the
Arts.

“They are all artists in their field, each unique in their work,
but with a shared passion to offer their work to as many as possible –
as do critics. Those who support and enjoy the arts always seek the
views of critics who have the knowledge, experience, connections and a
shared passion for the arts, which are as important and relevant today
as they ever were.”

The awards will be presented during a special event at the Barbican on 7 May 2013.
