Hail the genius that is Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart! This production has a strong air of melancholy nostalgia, a true celebration of one of America’s greatest duos. For those not acquainted with their work it pays great testament to this timeless era. Featuring some 32 inspirational and thought provoking numbers the show is slick and captures attention throughout.

The intimate atmosphere of the Salberg Studio and the simplicity of the set evoke memories of sitting in a cabaret style piano bar with old friends, enjoying a drink and listening to gentle, sophisticated music from bygone days.

The four highly accomplished performers sing and act through the partnership of Rogers and Hart singing each number expressively with passion and verve. Personal highlights include the haunting melody of ‘Blue Moon’ sung by multi-talented Broadway star Joel Karie the wonderfully sad duet ‘Why Can’t I’ performed to perfection by Gillian Bevan and Julie-Alanah Brighten a witty and humorous rendition of ‘To Keep my Love Alive’ and a passionate performance of ‘Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered’ by the exquisitely polished Gillian Bevan and ‘Johnny One Note’ sung with pure crystal tones by Julie-Alanah Brighten. A few examples of the feast that awaits.

The musical director Glyn Kerslake is sublime in his interpretation and his command of each piece is enchanting. Some of the harmonies are reminiscent of Sondheim and the timing in each performance outstanding.

David Benedict’s cleverly written narrative intrinsically links the songs charting the majestic collaboration of Rogers and Hart. The subtle, well judged lighting adds to the mood and poignancy of Hart’s lyrics, often mirroring the torment of his life. The understated choreography captures the mood of each number perfectly, enhancing the portrayal of the lyric.

This production is a wonderful alternative for the festive season and will leave you with a warm and contented glow.
