Winner of the 2015 Linbury Prize for Stage Design announced

The prize creates an opportunity for theatre design graduates to work with professional theatre companies

Grace Smart has been announced as the winner of the 2015 Linbury Prize for Stage Design. Smart won the award for her design of Saint Joan which will be produced at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast next year.

The Linbury Prize for Stage Design was founded by Anya Sainsbury to help recent graduates from theatre design courses. The prize offers applicants an opportunity to work with professional theatre companies and to collaborate with writers, directors and technical teams.

Twelve finalists have been chosen to work with four production companies with an exhibition of their work running at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton Lounge until 3 January.

Alongside Smart, three out of the twelve finalists have also won a commission on their designs – Camilla Clarke will design Human Animals at the Royal Court, Jen McGinley will design Autumn at the Traverse, Edinburgh and Philippa Brocklehurst will design A Passage to India at the Nuffield, Southampton.

In conjunction with the British Council a further winner, Minglu Wang will design a production of Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale in Ukraine in 2016.

Previous winners of the Linbury Prize include Tim Hatley, Anthony Ward, Es Devlin and Vicki Mortimer.
