Passenger has released the first single and music video from his new concept album for The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, based on his compositions for the hit musical of the same name.

The production opened at Chichester Festival Theatre this spring (you can read our review here) and will head to London next year, with theatre and dates still to be confirmed. The show is based on Rachel Joyce’s best-selling novel (Joyce also adapts) and has music and lyrics by Passenger, who said today: “I never thought I would write a musical. But when I was asked, I read the book and immediately fell in love with it.

“I love the story and I resonate so deeply with the characters and the journeys they go on. I instantly knew that it was something that I had to be a part of.  It’s been a real labour of love – not just for me, but all of the amazing people involved in the production.”

The single, “Song For The Countryside”, features Passenger and Jack Wolfe and marks the first track from the album inspired by the new musical. It can be streamed now, with a music video landing at 11am today.

Katy Rudd directs, with the Chichester premiere starring Mark Addy, Jenna Russell and Wolfe. The story follows Harold Fry as he leaves home in South Devon and walks to Berwick upon Tweed, trying to make sense of his past and bring hope to an old friend. The West End run of the the Chichester Festival Theatre production will be produced by Chris Harper Productions and Nick Sidi.

Passenger, known for “Let Her Go”, which topped charts around the world, has released 15 studio albums as an independent artist.
