Based on John Carney’s beloved 2016 film, the new musical is receiving its much-anticipated UK premiere. It follows a 16-year-old Dubliner named Conor, who tries to form a band in the 1980s. It is directed by Rebecca Taichman, with book writer Enda Walsh and a score by Gary Clark (with Carney).
In a shining five-star review, our critic called the show “a thumping great night out.”
Taking on the central role of Conor is Sheridan Townsley, while Adam Hunter is making his musical theatre debut in the role of brother Brendan. Grace Collender plays Raphina, the “model” who enchants the young Conor, while Conor’s younger sister Anne is played by Tateyana Arutura.
The London cast also features Tateyana Arutura (as Anne), Harry Curley (as Kevin), Jenny Fitzpatrick (as Sandra), Indiana Hawkes (as Gary), Cameron Hogan (as Darren), Lloyd Hutchinson (as Brother Baxter), Jesse Nyakudya (as Eamon), Lochlann Ó Mearáin (as Robert), Matthew Philp (as Declan), Seb Robinson (as Larry), Jack James Ryan (as Barry) and Lucianne McEvoy (as Penny).
Forming the creative team are choreographer Sonya Tayeh, set designer Bob Crowley, lighting designer Natasha Katz, video designer Luke Halls, costume designer Lisa Zinni, wigs, hair and make-up designer Helen Keane, musical director Nick J Barstow, casting director Stuart Burt, with choreography re-staged by Mia DeWeese and Camden Gonzales, associate direction by Nicholai La Barrie and dialect and voice coaching by Hazel Holder. Clark and Gordeno also serve as orchestrators and arrangers.
