Could the show be Broadway-bound?
Rob Madge’s WhatsOnStage Award-winning West End hit My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?) is sussing out the best way to conquer New York!
The show, which has had two West End runs alongside spells at the Edinburgh Fringe and at the Turbine Theatre, will be shown to US industry members presentations on 23 and 24 May at The Marjorie S Deane Little Theatre. Madge is currently in New York preparing for the event.
The solo piece is based on Madge’s own life as they reflect on their upbringing and their attempt to create a Disney parade. It received glowing write-ups during its off-West End and West End seasons. It is directed by Luke Sheppard (& Juliet) with songs by Pippa Cleary (The Great British Bake Off Musical).
The presentations are set to be hosted by Tom Smedes, Heather Shields and Peter Stern, arranged by Bill Kenwright and Paul Taylor Mills.
Industry presentations can often act as precursors to official runs, acting as a means of enticing investors and other stakeholders – so we’ll be keenly watching the project. As Madge said on social media, “Never hurts to give Broadway a go, does it. Let’s see what happens…”
