Paul Hilton joins the much-loved production
The Old Vic has revealed lead casting for A Christmas Carol – which is returning for its ninth consecutive year at the venue.
Adapted by Jack Thorne and directed by Matthew Warchus, the production has become a fixture in the theatre’s calendar since it first opened in 2017.
Last year’s run saw 52 per cent of attendees visiting the Old Vic for the first time, marking a record-breaking year for the production.
Warchus reflected on the show’s unexpected longevity, having originally been intended as a one-off production: “Jack Thorne’s superb script, in this joy-filled production, continues to delight and inspire audiences and delivers a message which feels as important as ever. Not only is this evidenced in the popularity of this version, but also in the ever-increasing charity donations from our audiences through the post-show bucket collection.
“From their incredible generosity, we have raised over £1.9million globally since 2017 – money which goes directly to food poverty and deprivation-focussed charities, making a tangible difference for those who need it.”
The 2024/25 production raised a record £235,000 for Waterloo Foodbank, contributing to the ongoing charitable efforts associated with the production. This year’s charity is yet to be announced.
For the new run, Paul Hilton will take on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge.
Of his casting, Hilton commented: “At its best, theatre is a transformative ritualistic experience and to play Ebenezer Scrooge in Matthew Warchus’ beautiful production of A Christmas Carol, in the magical Old Vic theatre that sings with the Ghosts and Spirits of the Past, Present and the Future, is a tremendous honour and a privilege. Living the dream.”
Warchus added: “I’m so excited that the great Paul Hilton will be joining us as Ebenezer Scrooge, taking the production into its ninth year. After decades of extraordinarily brilliant performances Paul has become one of the most highly regarded and beloved actors in the world. I’ve been in awe of his work for many years and I’m truly delighted that he’s agreed to take up the mantle of one of Dickens’ most unforgettable characters.”
The creative team includes set and costume designer Rob Howell, composition and arrangements by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Simon Baker, casting by David Grindrod, Ebenezer Scrooge and original casting by Jessica Ronane and movement by Lizzi Gee. Jamie Manton is the associate director.
This year also sees the continuation of IN CAMERA: PLAYBACK, with the 2020 version of the show set to be broadcast in care homes across the country for free.
It will be running from 12 November 2025 to 10 January 2026. Further details, including additional casting, are yet to be announced.
