Its producer Judy Craymer told the Telegraph recently, “I’m sure Viva! will rise again at some point… It can be worked on. It was heartbreaking that we had to close it.”
Scripted by Jennifer Saunders, Viva Forever! used the Spice Girls’ back catalogue to tell the story of a group of girls whose friendship is tested when they enter an X Factor-style TV talent show.
WhatsOnStage’s Michael Coveney branded the show “totally un-theatrical” and “completely un-satirical”.
“Audiences had a good time,” insisted Craymer. “It wasn’t Mamma Mia! but I wasn’t trying for it to be Mamma Mia! It was meant to be more the combination of Jennifer [Saunders], and comedy with a wink at pop culture.”
