Exclusive: Gerry and Sewell will transfer to the West End.
Written and directed by Olivier Award-winner Jamie Eastlake and co-produced by Newcastle Theatre Royal, Gerry and Sewell is based on Jonathan Tulloch’s novel The Season Ticket, which was later adapted into the cult Geordie film Purely Belter.
It follows two men and their mission to get their hands on a Newcastle United season ticket and is described as a “love letter” to the city and “a universal story of perseverance, loyalty and hope.”
The show premiered in 2022 at Laurels pub theatre in North Tyneside and has played across Newcastle, where it’ll return in June 2026.
Original cast members Dean Logan, Jack Robertson and Becky Clayburn will make their West End debuts at the Aldwych Theatre, alongside Erin Mullen. Further casting is to be confirmed.
Director Eastlake said: “The story of Gerry and Sewell is all about chasing a dream, overcoming adversity, being the little guys trying to be someone. The fact that this show started in a little 60-seater pub theatre in North Tyneside and is now transferring to the West End feels like everything at its core is being mirrored. Young people from the North. From nowt. Their stories deserve to be told. Everywhere.”
Joining Eastlake on the creative team are associate director Rosie Bowden, movement director Lucy Curry, musical director Declan Flannery, set designers Richard Power, Rosie Power and Joe Power, composer Aidan Tulloch, puppet designer and maker Georgia Hill, and general manager Alex Turner.
Chief executive of Newcastle Theatre Royal, Marianne Locatori commented: “The North East region is rich in storytelling and having had the opportunity to work with Jamie and the Eastlake Productions team to present this fabulous tale on our own stage, we are delighted to be part of the next chapter of Gerry and Sewell.”
Reinstating the importance of regional stories being told on a national stage by regional voices, Locatori continued: “Gerry and Sewell makes a bold statement about what can be achieved in partnership and celebrate North East creative talent and the ambition and spirit that make regional theatre a vital component of the UK’s creative landscape.”
Gerry and Sewell will play at the Aldwych Theatre from 13 January to 24 January 2026.
