Non-stop Motown classics awaits anyone heading to the Journal Tyne Theatre for some Dancing In The Streets.
With a MC on hand giving our snippets of Motown history to tie the production together, the classic tunes flow seamlessly and continuously all night.
The popular genre is a hit with the audience who are encouraged to sing along and get to their feet on several occasions. On the assumption that the audience knows the hits, song after song are belted out from a variety of performers, including interpretations of The Supremes, The Four Tops and Smokey Robinson.
On the whole the company give a good performance of the Motown classics, with favourites such as “Reach Out I’ll Be There”, “Stop In the Name of Love” and “Up Tight (everything’s alright)” to name just a few of the songs performed in the concert style production.
But the company are let down when, at times, they cross into the tribute band territory, in particular the slightly uncomfortably portrayal of Stevie Wonder which isn’t necessary to appreciate the performance of the Motown legend’s signature songs.
The combination of a live band, smoke machines and clever lighting create an ambience of a music club which adds energetic feel of the show.
Feeling more like a concert, if you want to hear non-stop Motown hits for 2 or so hours then this is the show for you.
