Bad Fairies will be released in 2027
Cynthia Erivo will lead the voice cast of Bad Fairies, a new animated feature set for release on 21 May 2027.
The film is directed by Megan Nicole Dong, creator of Netflix’s Centaurworld, and co-directed by Olivier Staphylas, whose previous credits include Puss in Boots and Wish Dragon. The original screenplay is written by Deborah Frances-White.
Tony Award-winning duo Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the creators of Six: The Musical, are writing original songs for the project. Multiple Grammy nominee Isabella “Machine” Summers, from Florence + The Machine, will compose the score and contribute to the songs.
The musical comedy follows a group of fairies who disrupt the order of their magical world. Erivo will voice Jayne Staplegun, a fairy whose defiant streak sets off a rebellion.
The creative team includes producer Carolyn Soper, editor Sim Evan-Jones, cinematographer James CJ Williams, character designer Uwe Heidschötter, and heads of story Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt.
Production is underway in London, with DNEG Animation as the digital partner. Bad Fairies marks the first feature under the first-look deal between Warner Brothers Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation.
Erivo, a three-time Academy Award nominee and winner of Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Awards, will next appear on screen as Elphaba in Wicked: For Good, opening on 21 November.
