Almeida announces new season

The Almeida Theatre's artistic director Rupert Goold today announces the Islington venue's spring/summer season, with a clear focus on female writers.

The world premiere of Ella Hickson's new play The Writer kicks off the season from 14 April to 26 May. Directed by Blanche McIntyre the piece sees Hickson return to the venue following her 2016 play Oil, which starred Anne-Marie Duff.

Next up, Natalie Abrahami directs a rare revival of Sophie Treadwell's 1929 play Machinal. Inspired by the real-life case of convicted and executed murderer Ruth Snyder, it runs from 4 June to 21 July.

After acclaimed runs at Theatre Royal Plymouth and the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017, Ontroerend Goed brings its immersive production £¥€$ (Lies) – in which the audience become the super-rich – to London for the first time from 31 July to 18 August.

Completing the season is the UK premiere of Clare Barron's Dance Nation (27 August to 6 October), directed by Bijan Sheibani. Winner of last year's Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, it is an exploration of youth, ambition and self-discovery set in the world of competitive dance.

Casting for all the above productions is yet to be announced.

After the success of their free tickets for under 25s scheme during last year's Hamlet, the 'Almeida For Free' initiative returns in April for the final week of Rebecca Frecknall’s Summer and Smoke.
