Spamilton at Menier Chocolate Factory casting announced
The Hamilton parody from the creator of Forbidden Broadway has its London premiere at the Menier
Casting has been announced for the UK premiere of Gerard Alessandrini's Spamilton, which opens at the Menier Chocolate Factory in July.
Directed by Alessandrini – best known for Forbidden Broadway, which also ran at the Menier – the cast will feature Marc Akinfolarin (Assassins, The Color Purple), Jason Denton (School of Rock), Eddie Elliott (Motown), Liam Tamne (The Phantom of the Opera) and Julie Yammanee (Lazarus), with special guests Sophie-Louise Dann (The Girls) and Damian Humbley (Merrily We Roll Along).
Spamilton is a parody musical which satirises and lampoons Lin-Manuel Miranda's hip hop musical Hamilton. The piece premiered in New York in 2016 and features numbers including "Look Around (The Schuyler Puppets)", "The Film When It Happens" and "Aaron Burr, Sir, Nervous-er". It also parodies musicals including Sweeney Todd, Gypsy and The Book of Mormon.
Miranda – whose musical opened in the West End in December and was nominated for a record-breaking 13 Olivier Award nominations, winning seven – said that he "laughed his brains out" when he first saw the show.
The production will have choreography by Gerry McIntyre, design by Morgan Large, costume by Dustin Cross, lighting by Tim Lutkin, sound by Gregory Clarke and Jonathan Everett, musical arrangements by Fred Barton and musical direction by Simon Beck.
