Images have been released offering a first look at Maggie Smith in A German Life at the Bridge Theatre.

The new play by Christopher Hampton is a one-woman show that stars Smith as Brunhilde Pomsel. It is drawn from the life and testimony of the real woman, who lived between 1911 and 2017. The piece follows Pomsel as she struggles to make ends meet as a secretary in Berlin during the 1930s and follows her life working for a Jewish insurance broker, the German Broadcasting Corporation and Joseph Goebbels.

Smith is directed by Jonathan Kent in the show, which is currently in previews and runs for five weeks until 11 May.

Design for A German Life is from Anna Fleischle, lighting by Jon Clark with sound by Paul Groothuis. The piece is based on the documentary about Pomsel, also called A German Life.
